Bond's Alley was a local site for politics, peddlers' shows, whittling, cockfights, and fisticuffs. It was named for Bond's Drug Store, located there since 1881, which sheltered in bad weather people who usually sunned in the alley. Early neighbors ranged from a Chinese laundry to an auto assembly shop.
