Lime was produced for several uses, including enriching a farmer's soil with manure to buffer the soil's ph, being sold as white-wash for painting barns and basements, use in the tanning industry, folk remedies for burns, gangrene, sore throat, and removing warts, and eradicating moles from the garden. Each unique kiln followed a process that included a cylindrical shape with a shaft narrowing at the bottom, a boxy shape formed by loose stones to a height of 10-20 feet, a medal grate at the bottom holding the wood for burning, an opening below the grate to cool the lime powder, pieces of lime fed into a loose pile for heating, and temperatures ranging from 1600 to 2000 degrees fahrenheit.
