Daniel Lyons, a schooner built in Oswego, New York, in 1873, sank in Lake Michigan off Algoma, Wisconsin, after colliding with the schooner Kate Gillett during a voyage from Chicago to Black Rock, New York. In the early hours of October 18, 1878, after Kate Gillett began moving erratically, Daniel Lyons tried to avoid a collision but was struck in the side. The vessels stayed locked together long enough for Daniel Lyons’s crew to escape aboard the other ship before the schooner sank bow first. Now an archaeological site and diving destination, the wreck is valued for its well-documented story and maritime significance.
