August and Mary (Schott) Westphal built this stately brick-and-stucco English Tudor mansion in 1913 on a triangular lot overlooking downtown historic Hartford. Its interior features golden oak and birch woodwork, plaster-carved moldings, a grand staircase, and it originally was heated with hot water. In 1917, a three-foot-deep concrete fountain was built in front of the mansion on the triangle at Branch and South Main Streets. August Westphal was known in Wisconsin and nationally as the "Cheese King" and as one of the state's largest cheese manufacturers. He owned and operated more than 50 cheese factories, built the condensery in Hartford, won many awards for his cheese, and shipped it abroad. In 1919, a shipment of 170,000 pounds of Swiss block cheese was sent to Norway, and condensed milk was sent to England for use by the American Army in a quantity that would last for the next two years. The condensery was later sold to Kraft Cheese Company.
