Opposite the south end of Main Street at 4th Street stood the two-storied, red brick Institute Building, where the Mishawaka Academic and Normal Institute held its classes. It served as a free school for Mishawaka children and a select school for advanced study and teacher training, supported by the village, with an enrollment of over two hundred students from the town and surrounding area.
