In 1997, an auto accident took the life of Ray "Flounder" Wampler, one of Dug Ketterman's close friends. In the months that followed, Ketterman helped plan, fundraise for, and design the first Flounder Skatepark in Wampler's memory. Twenty-four years later, the City of Valparaiso set out to rebuild it as a new and improved tribute to the original and partnered with Ketterman, founder of DugOut Design Studio, a Valparaiso native, and a lifelong skater, to work with the city on community engagement for the skatepark design. Ketterman collaborated with Valpo Parks to create Flounder and Friends Skatepark, a design based on the original Flounder Skatepark and intended to appeal to both absolute beginners and half-century veterans while honoring Wampler. Ketterman said the park is completely organic, with the original design based on the Fibonacci sequence and centered on the Flounder Bowl, which takes off from the original logo to pay homage to the original Flounder Skatepark. The design aims to meet skaters at every ability level, helping keep the sport alive and providing a safe place to practice and progress.
