The Sachs Hardware Building, one of Lewiston's most historic buildings, was brought in pieces by wagon from Otsego Lake Village around 1891 at the founding of Lewiston and the opening of the M&H Lumber Co. It originally housed the Otsego Hotel and, on the street level, the popular Corner Saloon owned by Martin Nelson. George Sachs came to Lewiston in 1898 from Canada as an apprenticed blacksmith and joined his brothers Charles and William, who were also blacksmiths, in serving the needs of local lumber camps and mills. In 1910, the Sachs Hardware Company was established and helped supply the community with tools and other goods after the mill was gone and the M and H Company store had closed. For many years the business was essential to the struggling village, providing necessary supplies for subsistence as well as the town's only telephone and only gas pump, with gasoline brought in by wagon in 55 gallon drums and sold at 18 cents per gallon. During the hard times of the 1920s and 1930s, when many small farms were failing, the Sachs family was generous to the community and helped keep many families from losing their land. After timber harvesting gave way to agriculture as the area's principal business, the company expanded into farm implements to support local farmers. The family ran the hardware business there for 79 years until its sale to Ron and Gary Haas in 1989, and remained prominent in Lewiston through both the roots of the original business and the donation of the family homestead that became the Lewiston Historical Society Museum.
