Brown Covered Bridge in northwestern Shrewsbury, Vermont, carries Upper Cold River Road over the Cold River in a wooded ravine and stands as one of the best-preserved Town lattice truss bridges in the United States. Built in 1880 by noted bridgewright Nichols M. Powers, it is a single-span wooden covered bridge distinguished by its rare slate roof, possibly the only surviving example of its kind among U.S. covered bridges. Adapted to its site with stone abutments, including one built around a large boulder, it remained largely unaltered through routine maintenance, survived minor flood damage in 2011, and reopened in 2016 after rehabilitation.
