Paddy Knob is a mountain summit on the Virginia–West Virginia line in the United States, rising to 4,478 feet. It is the 29th highest summit in West Virginia and the 14th highest in Virginia, making it one of the higher peaks in this part of the central Appalachians. Its name has an unusual linguistic origin: in African American Vernacular English, paddy meant bear, and the mountain’s name comes from that usage. Paddy Knob is notable for its cross-border location, its elevation, and the distinctive origin of its name.
