Shawnee State Park in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, centers on Shawnee Lake, a reservoir created by damming Shawnee Creek, which was named for the Shawnee people who once lived across parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky before being pushed westward. The area had earlier been part of an important trade route and military road during the French and Indian War, and General John Forbes built the nearby Forbes Road in 1758 toward Fort Duquesne. Authorized in 1947, the park opened in 1951 after dam construction began in 1949. It is now a year-round recreation area with boating, fishing, trails, camping, hunting, and Shawnee Lodge on a lake island.
