In 1898, Indiana artists J. Ottis Adams and T. C. Steele came to Brookville and selected this site for studios they called "The Hermitage." For several years it was home to an art colony where J. Ottis Adams, T. C. Steele, William Forsythe, and Otto Starke painted. To the east of this point stood the old Speer's Mill.
