Sand Hills Light stands on Lake Superior at Ahmeek on Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. It was developed after Eagle River’s harbor declined and the older Eagle River Light was decommissioned in 1908, leaving this stretch of coast without a navigation light and contributing to wrecks on Sawtooth Reef. Authorized in 1893 but not commissioned until 1917, the lighthouse was completed in 1919 and served for two decades before the Coast Guard automated it in 1939. It later briefly became a training facility during the Second World War, remained active until 1954, and was eventually restored in the 1990s and adapted as a bed and breakfast.
