Lucy Adaline Gresham, born in Greensboro in 1806, was the daughter of Thomas W. and Charity Grimes and the wife of Albert Y. Gresham, a young lawyer. She died in Greensborough on April 16th 1826 in the 20th year of her age, and her grave in the old part of the Greensboro cemetery was marked by a marble slab bearing an inscription to her memory. Shortly after the slab was placed over her grave, it mysteriously disappeared. Mrs. Grimes later learned that a suspicious marble slab was being used in an underground bakery and candy factory in Greensboro, where access to the workroom was restricted and the owner carefully guarded the secret baking and candy-making process. She went there, demanded to see the slab, and found it lying upside down on a table in a secret chamber; when it was turned over, it bore her daughter's name. She insisted that it be thoroughly cleaned and restored to the grave by daybreak the next morning, and it was immediately returned to its proper place.
