Old Town was a fording place on the Great Warriors Path from New York to the South. In 1741 Thomas Cresap built a stockade fort here that was used as a refuge during the French and Indian War after Braddock’s defeat. George Washington was here on his first visit to Maryland in 1748 and often afterward.
