From 1861 to 1865, soldiers enlisted from the Town of Rollingsford, New Hampshire, served in many Civil War units, including New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, Illinois, Iowa, U.S. Infantry, and U.S. Navy organizations. Among them were Col. A. W. Rollins of the 7th New Hampshire Volunteers, Capt. L. L. Dodge and numerous others of the 13th New Hampshire Volunteers, Lieut. D. K. Scruton of the 3rd New Hampshire, men of the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th, and 14th New Hampshire units, members of the 27th, 17th, 30th, 5th, 8th, 12th, and 1st Maine units, soldiers in the 1st and 2nd New York Cavalry and Heavy Artillery, the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry, the 8th Illinois Cavalry, the 40th Massachusetts Volunteers, the 27th Iowa, the 17th U.S. Infantry, several men in the U.S. Navy, and Samuel H. Rollins of the Strafford Guards. Their service was honored in Rollingsford by William Morton, who erected this memorial on May 20, 1903; he was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on February 9, 1814, and died in Rollingsford on June 4, 1904.
