Constructed around 1912 on a triangular lot in Auburndale's historic business district, this building became known as the "flatiron" building because its corner position and shape resembled the triangular electric clothing press irons popularized in the 1920's. It is one of the oldest Masonary Venacular commercial structures in the district and is believed to be the only commercial building to survive the three fires that destroyed the heart of Auburndale's business sector in 1912, 1913, and 1915. Originally built as the First State Bank of Auburndale, it opened in 1912 and failed in the 1930's during the Great Depression. Alice Kaszer, an early local photographer well known in Auburndale, once operated a photo shop there, and other occupants included a furniture store, post office, restaurant, and professional office.
