Ross Peak is a 9,008-foot mountain in Montana’s Bridger Range, about 13 miles north of Bozeman in Gallatin National Forest. The range’s fourth-highest summit rises sharply, standing about 3,000 feet above Ross Creek within a horizontal mile. It also marks a divide between two river systems, with runoff from its east and west slopes flowing into different creeks and river chains. The peak’s official name honors Melvin Ross Sr., who settled nearby in 1864 and placed a flag on the summit visible for many miles. Its alpine subarctic climate brings long snowy winters, cool to warm summers, and year-round precipitation.
