Zebulon B. Vance was a Civil War governor who led the state from 1862 to 1865 and again from 1877 to 1879. He served as colonel of the 26th N.C. Regiment from 1861 to 1862 and later was a U.S. Senator from 1879 to 1894. His birthplace was 6 miles northeast.
