West from McBaine, Rocheport lies 8.8 miles away in Katy Trail State Park. After the Perche Creek crossing, the MKT Nature & Fitness Trail branches right and runs 8.8 miles to Columbia. The route to Rocheport passes through Missouri River bottomland and Huntsdale at milepost 171.7, then continues between the Manitou Bluffs on the right and the Missouri River on the left. Benches line this section, and in winter bald eagles can be seen. Around milepost 174.4, Torbett Spring emerges from Lewis and Clark Cave on the bluff side of the trail; the cave is on private property and is home to endangered bats. Above and to the left of the cave are remains of Native American pictographs on the limestone bluff. Plants along this stretch include trumpet creeper, touch-me-not, poison ivy, bittersweet, ironweed, poke, and blackberries, and in summer indigo buntings and hummingbirds appear along the bluffs. The Lewis and Clark Expedition camped a short distance upriver from milepost 172.9 on June 6, 1804. At milepost 177.5, a former railroad explosives storage bunker is built into a bluff shelter on private property, and at milepost 177.9 a monument honors Edward D. “Ted” Jones for his contributions to Katy Trail State Park.
