Snow Mountain Wilderness is a protected mountain landscape in Mendocino National Forest in California’s North Coast Range, created in 1984 and later enlarged before becoming part of Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument in 2015. Spanning more than 60,000 acres along a high divide, it rises from foothill country to twin summits above 7,000 feet and contains subalpine terrain, mixed conifer forest, and ridges that support mountain mahogany. More than 500 plant species and 122 wildlife species live here, while streams on either side of the divide feed Stony Creek and the Eel River system. Trails and trailheads support recreation, and the area was heavily damaged by the 2001 Trough Fire.
