Silver Peak Wilderness is a federally protected coastal mountain landscape in the Santa Lucia Mountains of southwestern Monterey County within Los Padres National Forest. Established in 1992 and enlarged in 2002, it now includes about 31,555 acres in two separate units divided by the Willow Creek drainage and nearby fire roads. The terrain rises steeply from near the Pacific to 3,590-foot Silver Peak, supporting varied plant communities shaped by slope and moisture. These include forested canyons, open slopes, the world’s southernmost stand of coastal redwoods, and a rare grove of Sargent cypress, gray pine, and Santa Lucia fir. Known for rugged scenery, waterfalls, and trails, it is used for hiking, backpacking, and horse camping.
