Clyde L. “Smackover” Scott was an outstanding athlete who brought national recognition to his hometown through a brilliant athletic career. He was a football All-American at the University of Arkansas in 1948, attended the United States Naval Academy in 1945, competed on the United States Olympic Team in 1948, and won a silver medal in the 110-yard hurdles. He also played in the National Football League for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1949 to 1951 and for the Detroit Lions in 1952.
