Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge protects a river corridor in central Alabama along the Cahaba River below Birmingham. Established on September 25, 2002, it covers 3,689.63 acres, including about 3.5 miles of the river, from near the meeting of the Little Cahaba and Cahaba rivers to Piper Bridge in Bibb County. The refuge was created largely to safeguard the threatened Cahaba lily, for which this is one of the best-known strongholds, and it also preserves habitat for endangered aquatic species and many other rare plants and animals. It supports conservation and low-impact recreation and could grow through future land acquisitions.
