Helyn Fiedler Toth, born in 1920 in the house beside the farm, recalled growing up in Everett through the 1930s in a close-knit rural community shaped by family farming, school, church, dances, and the village store and post office. Her family raised chickens, pigs, cows, vegetables, and fruit, made butter, cottage cheese, and ice cream, and sold produce from a small roadside stand while her father, William, also worked other jobs to support the household. She remembered enduring friendships with classmates and neighbors, including children she studied with in the one-room school and later at Boston Township High School, where she graduated in 1938. Life in Everett also centered on Sunday school, social dances, and local businesses such as Maude Carter’s store, which served as a gathering place and post office. Nearby farms, including one established in 1867 by Norman and Martha Hunt and the neighboring Szalay farm, were part of the same community network that shaped her life, and she maintained those ties until her death in 2013.
