A post office here was established as Pigeon Roost on January 16, 1872. The name was changed to Rosine on June 10, 1873, in honor of Jennie Taylor McHenry, 1832-1914, a poet who wrote under the pen name “Rosine.” A collection of her poems was published. She was the wife of Henry D. McHenry, a prominent lawyer and banker. The town was incorporated on September 15, 1873.
