More than 20 Confederate soldiers are buried here, most of them having died in Confederate hospitals located in Fort Valley in 1864-1865. Some were killed in the wreck of a troop train three miles north of the city while en route to rejoin the Confederate Army of Tennessee. The Buckner and Gamble Hospitals and several temporary hospitals were located here, and patriotic men and women of the vicinity assisted in caring for the sick and wounded.
