Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch, Iowa, preserves the setting of Herbert Hoover’s childhood and traces the larger arc of his life. Born there in 1874, Hoover spent his first eleven years in the small farming community before the deaths of both parents led him to leave Iowa. Efforts by Hoover, Lou Henry Hoover, and their family helped restore his birthplace cottage and recreate parts of the neighborhood, including buildings connected to his early life and Quaker upbringing. The site also includes Hoover and Lou Henry Hoover’s graves, the Isis statue given for his wartime relief work, prairie landscape, and the neighboring presidential library and museum.
