Early in the 19th century, Jarman Rakes, a miller, built the stone facing of the nearby mill dam. His operation became notable for an advertising scheme that would have suited a much later time: he allowed his customers the exclusive privilege of fishing for brook trout in his pond while they waited for their grist.
