William Harris Crawford was born in this vicinity on February 24, 1772. Early in life he was taken to Georgia and became a leading politician of the era. He served as United States Senator, Minister to France, Secretary of War, and Secretary of the Treasury, and he was a candidate for the presidency in 1824, when the election was decided by the House of Representatives.
