Cedarburg's Covered Bridge, originally called Red Bridge, spans Cedar Creek and is one of the last surviving covered bridges in Wisconsin, where about 40 once stood. Built in 1876 after earlier crossings repeatedly washed out, it served road traffic for decades and was modified in 1927 with a center abutment to bear heavier loads. As automobiles strained the aging structure, preservation took precedence. Ozaukee County assumed its care, bought the bridge and surrounding land, and in 1962 moved it about 50 feet east for use as a pedestrian crossing beside a new road bridge. Its timber lattice truss construction and traditional oak-peg joinery preserve its 19th-century rural character.
