Mesahchie Peak rises 8,795 feet in Washington’s North Cascades National Park as the highest summit on Ragged Ridge, near Katsuk Peak. Its name comes from Chinook Jargon, in which mesahchie means “wicked.” The mountain stands in a severe alpine setting, with the Katsuk and Mesahchie Glaciers descending from its flanks amid sharp ridges and deep glacially carved valleys. Like much of the North Cascades, this landscape was formed through tectonic activity, terrane accretion, uplift, faulting, and repeated Pleistocene glaciation. In a marine west coast climate shaped by Pacific weather systems, the area receives heavy precipitation, especially winter snowfall, and remains one of the United States’ most rugged glaciated environments.
