Red Mountain is a 7,662-foot summit in Washington’s North Cascades, in North Cascades National Park and the Stephen Mather Wilderness. On the western end of Ragged Ridge in Skagit County, its smooth crest of brick-red rock gives it its name. The mountain is especially notable for its steep local relief, rising 4,260 feet above Fisher Creek in just 1.5 miles. Runoff flows toward the Skagit River through Panther and Fisher Creeks. Its setting reflects the region’s marine west coast climate, with heavy winter rain and snow, and a geologic history shaped by tectonic activity, terrane accretion about 50 million years ago, and later Pleistocene glaciation.
