Kitch-iti-kipi, in Palms Book State Park on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula near Manistique, is the state’s largest natural freshwater spring and one of the region’s best-known scenic landmarks. Known also as the Big Spring or “Mirror of Heaven,” its Ojibwe name is commonly said to mean “big cold spring.” The oval, limestone-fed pool is about 300 feet long, 175 feet wide, and 40 feet deep, with exceptionally clear water rising at about 10,000 gallons a minute and holding near 45 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Saved for public ownership in 1926 through John I. Bellaire and Frank Palms, it remains valued for its geology, transparency, and enduring aura of mystery.
