A B-24 based at Charleston, South Carolina, crashed on Bull Mountain on March 15, 1944, one-half mile south of the fire tower during a training mission. The crew members were Lt. Gilbert R. Libbey of Waukesha, Wisconsin; Cpl. Carl E. Pierce of Knoxville, Tennessee; and PFC. James J. Tiffner of Alkol, West Virginia.
