Edward Hunter, born 22 June 1793 in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, moved to this home in 1830 and, in an agreement with the community, built the West Nantmeal (Wallace) Seminary on the property, specifying that all persons and persuasions would be allowed to meet in it to worship God. A gentleman farmer, he later joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1840 and, during his years here, hosted the Prophet Joseph Smith and other church leaders as they came to proclaim the restored gospel, while the site also became a gathering place for new church members. In 1842 he left the area to join with the main body of the church in Nauvoo, Illinois, was instrumental in the church’s pioneering trek west in 1847, eventually served as the church’s presiding bishop, helped lay the cornerstone of the Salt Lake Temple, and died in Salt Lake City on 16 October 1883, always fond of his Pennsylvania roots.
