The first church in Wyoming County was organized in 1812 at the residence of Thomas and Ellen Cooke near Oceana, with James Ellison as minister. Meetings were held in homes, the courthouse, and schools. About 1870, services moved to Jesse. The present church was erected in 1895 on Laurel Fork land donated by Green Cooke.
