Saint Paul’s Church in Mount Vernon, New York, grew from a parish established in 1665 into one of the region’s oldest surviving parish sites, with a church completed in 1764 and a cemetery containing about 9,000 burials dating from 1704. The grounds connect to major moments in early American history, including the 1733 election linked to John Peter Zenger’s press freedom case and Revolutionary War use as military hospitals after nearby fighting. The cemetery holds Hessian and Continental graves, African American burials, and the county’s oldest dated gravestone. Its 1758 bell, cast at Whitechapel, became a celebrated historic object, and the preserved site later opened to the public under National Park Service stewardship.
