The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Great Britain from 1812 to 1815 and involved both land and naval engagements. Causes of the war included seizure of U.S. sailors, Indian attacks, and trade restrictions. An American invasion of Canada resulted in the British burning Washington D.C., the nation's capital. The British continued on to Baltimore and attacked Ft. McHenry. This battle inspired the writing of the "Star Spangled Banner." The last battle was at New Orleans, an American victory that took place after the signing of the peace treaty. Total American casualties were 6,800.
