Mount Haeckel is a 13,424-foot Sierra Nevada summit on the boundary of Kings Canyon National Park and the John Muir Wilderness in northern California. Part of the Evolution Group named in 1895 by Theodore S. Solomons for thinkers linked to evolutionary thought, it honors German zoologist Ernst Haeckel. Its recorded climbing history began on July 14, 1920, when Walter L. Huber led the first ascent by the West Shoulder, with another Sierra Club party reaching the top minutes later by the South Ridge after aiming for Mount Darwin. Since then, several routes have been established, including the especially admired Northwest Arête.
