Josiah Marcum (1759-1846?) enlisted from Bedford County and served in Colonel Campbell’s Virginia Militia Regiment in 1780-81, as a wagon guard during General Gates’s retreat, and as a drummer at the Battle of Guilford Court House, North Carolina. An early settler in the Tug River Valley, he was a gunsmith and blacksmith, later lived in Kentucky and Ohio, and became the progenitor of the area Marcum family.
