Valley of Fire State Park in southeastern Nevada spans nearly 46,000 acres of Mojave Desert basin and is known for red Aztec Sandstone formed about 150 million years ago, then shaped by uplift, faulting, and erosion into dramatic walls, domes, and other formations. The area also preserves petroglyphs left by Ancestral Puebloans who visited from roughly 300 BC to 1150 AD for hunting, gathering, and ceremonial purposes. Nevada began creating the park in 1931, and Civilian Conservation Corps crews built much of its early infrastructure after 1933. Opened in 1934, it became Nevada’s oldest state park and later earned national recognition as a National Natural Landmark.
