Red River Logging built the first boardinghouses in Pine Town in 1915 near the mill. They had wood floors and canvas tents. Nine two-story units on Birch Street housed eighty men each, while two units south of Birch Street housed women. As the mill expanded, more units were built. Small apartments in each bunkhouse housed two men, with communal bathrooms and showers on each floor, and the mill provided clean linens. In 1918, the Madero Unit burned down, killing four men. When it was rebuilt, fire sprinklers were added to all units. Loggers came to town perhaps twice a month for clean clothes, hot showers, and cold beer, and then might play poker at the club across the street or go out of town for more traditional amusement.
