For four to six months along the trail, a wagon encampment functioned as a moveable community, usually arranged in a circle to form a temporary corral, with tents and bedrolls around it sheltering exhausted pioneers while guards watched grazing livestock and looked for wild animals or thieves. At sunrise, about four o’clock, the guards woke the camp by calling out or firing rifles, morning fires were lit, coffee and breakfast prepared, men and boys gathered the cattle and horses, tents were struck, dishes cleaned, wagons repacked, oxen yoked, and the wagons pulled into a caravan for another day on the trail west. Depending on the weather, the train might remain at the nooning spot for several hours and travel again in the cooler evening, though most rested only about an hour before moving on, while women and children gathered wood, hunters searched for game, and the wagon master sought an evening campsite with water, fuel wood, and forage. As the sun lowered, the lead wagon began a circle and the others followed about a wagon length apart, then the animals were unhitched and wagon tongues and chains connected the wagons into a corral; outside it, tents were pitched, wood gathered, campfires started, guards chosen, and livestock released to graze. Evening brought meals, mending clothes, repairing wagons, washing dishes, resting, visiting, card playing, and sometimes music, singing, and dancing, but after traveling fifteen to twenty miles the camp soon quieted and slept. More than fifty thousand wagons are estimated to have gone west in many sizes and shapes, and emigrant wagons commonly showed typical designs and construction. Wagon boxes generally followed two styles: straight plank-sided boxes common on freight wagons and farm wagons on the Oregon Trail, built from stacked planks fastened with metal straps and bolts, and panel boxes with horizontal frames and vertical stiles, based on Conestoga freight wagons, valued for strength and flexibility on rough terrain. The undercarriage included axle assemblies, coupling pole, hounds, and a cross arm, usually without springs and resting instead on bolsters, while axle technology evolved from simple iron or wood axles to stronger wooden axle blocks with clipped or encased axles. In 1857 the thimble skein axle was patented, adding a metal casing at the axle end to hold the wheel with a threaded burr; earlier wheels had been secured by linch pins and needed frequent greasing with animal fat or pine tar mixtures. Some wagons had lever-operated brakes near the rear bolster, but many lacked brakes and used rough locks, wheelshoes, or a tree tied to the back wheels on downward slopes. Most emigrant wagons used cotton or linen canvas covers stretched over wooden bows and secured with staples, and they were traditionally painted blue with red undercarriages and wheels, though many emigrant parties chose bright matching colors for uniformity and identification, some waterproofed canvas with oil-based paint, and some decorated covers with slogans such as “For Oregon or Bust.” Before mass production began in the eighteen sixties with Studebaker Brothers Company’s standard interchangeable parts and faster techniques, most emigrant wagons were built by independent wagon makers, wheelwrights, and local blacksmiths using largely hand-forged metal parts and handcrafted wooden components.
