In downtown Montrose, Colorado, the original 1912 Denver and Rio Grande Depot now serves as a local history museum devoted to preserving the heritage of Montrose County and the surrounding region. Founded in 1973 by the Montrose County Historical Society after the railroad donated the depot and land to the city, it occupies a building that reflects Montrose’s railroad origins and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its collections, many from pioneer families, cover Native American history and the lives of homesteaders, farmers, ranchers, railroaders, and miners, while research holdings, events, and educational programs keep community history active and accessible.
