Little Tom Mountain in Holyoke, Massachusetts, is a 73-acre preserve on the east side of the Mount Tom ridge, created in 2002 through a partnership that protected part of the former Mount Tom Ski Area. The Trustees of Reservations acquired Little Tom, while the Holyoke Boys & Girls Club took the base area, and the partners agreed to coordinate management and environmental education. Part of the Metacomet Range, Little Tom has mixed forest, ledges, hollows, and vernal pools, including an isolated pool notable for many spotted salamander and wood frog egg masses. Its setting also reflects the Connecticut River valley’s deep geologic past, from dinosaur tracks to glacial Lake Hitchcock.
