Old Hughes Furnace was an early Texas blast furnace that operated during the 1850's, producing about a ton of pig iron a day. It was manned by slave labor and, during the Civil War, furnished iron for the Confederate forces. Remains of the furnace were located one mile east of Hughes Springs on the farm of Perry Fite, who permitted removal of the old brickwork for use in this restoration.
