Founded in 1889 by J. F. Anderson and his son Charles as a private bank two years after Ardmore was established, the First National Bank and Trust Company of Ardmore received a national charter within a year, becoming the first bank in Indian Territory to be nationally chartered. After obtaining its charter, it moved into permanent quarters at the northeast corner of Caddo and Main Streets in Ardmore, in a two-story building that was the town's first brick structure. After the great fire of 1895 destroyed most downtown buildings, the bank rebuilt at the northeast corner of Washington and Main Streets. In 1918 it constructed a new building that was considered the most striking architectural structure of its time, with gold leaf murals, a stained glass skylight, and a thirty-five-foot ceiling that drew sightseers from near and far. In December 1933, the bank was reorganized and rechartered as First National Bank of Ardmore and continued operating under that name for many years. In 1964 it organized a trust company, expanding its services, and as customer growth soon outpaced its building, plans for a new one were made in 1965. After construction was completed in 1975, the bank moved to a new home at the northeast corner of Main and D Streets, and it operates seven branches in Marietta, Lone Grove, Ringling, and the Ardmore Airpark.
