Kachina Peaks Wilderness spans 18,616 acres in northern Arizona, protecting most of the upper slopes of the San Francisco Peaks, including Humphreys Peak, the state’s highest point. The area preserves the remains of a large composite volcano whose final eruption about two million years ago formed a broad caldera ringed by Humphreys, Doyle, Fremont, and Agassiz peaks. It also contains clear evidence of Ice Age glaciation. The wilderness is sacred to several tribes, with religious shrines still in use, and its name reflects Hopi tradition. Ecologically, it includes Arizona’s only Arctic-alpine vegetation and the sole known home of the threatened San Francisco Peaks groundsel.
