Iron sculptures by Todie Zweygardt honor the Cheyenne and other Indians who survived the November 29, 1864, massacre at Sand Creek, Colorado, fled to the Cherry Creek Valley, and remained there until forces of the Plains tribes joined them for an attack at Julesburg, Colorado, on January 7, 1865. In the valley below, on April 25, 1887, Sam Ferguson and neighboring homesteaders shot and butchered the last known bull buffalo of this area.
