Troops H and I of the 10th Calvary, Buffalo Soldiers, were dispatched from what is now Cheyenne Wells, Colorado. Troop H arrived on September 25, 1868 to relieve the Forsyth Scouts, who were known to be in danger of total annihilation by a largely superior force of Indians on the Arickaree River.
